The Keeping Young People Engaged (KYPE) report

The KYPE initiative was launched in 2003 by the Youth Justice Board and Connexions and was undertaken in sixty youth offending teams to address the joint target of ensuring that at least 90% of young people who have offended are engaged in education, training or employment during and at the end of the their sentence. Part of the approach was to employ Connexions personal advisers with supporting mentors to offer an intensive one-to-one relationship.

A rapid evidence assessment of the impact of mentoring on re-offending: a summary

This review summarises the best available evidence on the effects of mentoring on re-offending and was based on 18 studies. Overall results suggest that mentoring significantly reduced subsequent offending by 4 to 11 per cent.

Employment Chances for Young Offenders

Youth Justice Board research focuses on a programme working with young offenders to help them to find an appropriate learning/work opportunity. The programme proved particularly powerful in support for a mentoring component as part of education and training provision.

A qualitative study to explore how a sample of young people experienced the process of mentoring. Generally, the experience was reported to be highly favourable and the study suggests that attachment theory is helpful in explaining the mentoring process and in promoting ideas for future development.
