Playing for Success study centres in Northampton achieve the Approved Provider Standard
The Department for Children, Schools and Families Playing for Success initiative is establishing out of school hours study support centres at sports clubs across the country. The centres use the environment and medium of football, rugby, cricket and other sports as motivational tools and focus on raising literacy, numeracy and ICT standards.
In May 2008 Playing for Success study centres at Northampton "Saints" Rugby Club and Northamptonshire "Steelbacks" Cricket Club were successful in gaining the Approved Provider Standard. This means they have met the required standard of safe and competent practice. A portfolio of evidence along with a detailed summary of practice was collated by Anna Letts (Steelbacks) and Vicki and Jeanette Campkin (Saints). Vicki enjoyed putting together the portfolio as a worthwile learning experience which enhanced the work of the centres.
"The work of the Playing for Success centres, supporting children's education in a tailored way, corresponds with our own vision of the future of learning - personalised around the needs of every child. In addition, centres are increasingly forming part of the Extended Schools service by local authorities, and Playing for Success continues to contribute to each of the five outcomes young people identified in Every Child Matters" quoted by Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families.
