Post-16
Peer mentoring can have a powerful influence on young people in a variety of settings
“Peer mentoring is a sleeping giant…. its enormous potential is just waiting to be harnessed”
Peer mentoring is frequently used in the post 16 sector as a supporting strategy for young people engaging with; voluntary and community groups, education providers and youth provision. Peer mentoring gives young people the opportunity to share ideas, concerns and other issues with their peers providing emotional support and guidance helping young people progress and contribute to their community.
Peer mentoring projects can be used to support a number government strategies including Aiming High, NEET strategy, Youth justice and the 14-19 reform agenda.
Peer mentoring is often implemented to address issues such as homelessness, drug and alcohol misuse, young carers, BME, young parents, mental health, disabilities, attendance, retention, enrichment and attainment.
MBF support programmes in setting up peer mentoring, as well as supporting the development of safe effective peer mentoring schemes.

Benefits of peer mentoring in the Post 16 Sector
Mentee Base 10 Project, Leeds
“My mentee had many personal problems, such as her chaotic drug and alcohol use, negative impact from friends, peer pressure, lack of accommodation and direction in life, which were all difficult aspects of her life that needed tackling. She wanted to change which was half the battle as all I had to do was support and help her.”
Mentor, Leeds YOS
“It’s been really helpful in changing my outlook on life and as a result my self confidence and esteem has increased. The one to one sessions were excellent. They allowed me to talk to someone about my personal issues.”
