East Bridgwater school recognised for their peer support

Peer mediators win Diana Award for the second year running

East Bridgwater Community School were celebrating this month after hearing that their peer mediators had won a Diana award for the second year running for their work supporting younger pupils in the school.

Peer mediators within the school aim to help other pupils help themselves through working through problems and listening to both sides of the situation. They also run a confidential email service and a 'drop in' centre for those who are having difficulties in the school.

As part of their award, the peer mediators and their families visited Earl Spencer, Diana's brother, at Althorp House, the ancestral home of the Spencer family and he has agreed to be the patron of their peer mediation scheme.

Speaking about the scheme, he said:

"Diana first made her mark at school, when her caring nature for younger or more timid girls was recognised with a unique award, given to her by the headmistress.

It's so very right that her memory is preserved today by schools such as East Bridgwater Community School, with anti-bullying initiatives"
