Guiding Lights

A new social media initiative launched this week by the Department for Children, Schools and Families aims to use role models to inspire teenagers to consider careers they might not have thought of, and to realise that entry to a profession could be within their grasp.

Centring on a Facebook page entitled ‘Guiding Lights’, it’s designed to encourage people from a variety of professions, industries, areas and backgrounds to act as role models for 13-19 year olds as they make important choices about their education options and career paths. Supporting PR activity will spread the word via other media.

The aim is to grow a community around the site ­– and engage with them by inviting role models to submit their stories and by pointing 13-19 year olds to existing information, advice and guidance resources, both on-line and in their schools and communities.
