White British boys doing better at school
Thanks to a programme of additional support aimed at increasing the groups’ attainment levels
Camden invested £50,000 into the multi faceted programme including mentoring support in April 2008, and while the group continues to perform well below their male peers, 2009 results show that things are beginning to improve.
At the end of primary school, 61% of white British boys, eligible for free school meals in Camden, achieved the expected level in English and maths compared to 48% nationally.
A range of successful mentoring programmes provided by school staff, university students and business partners had a positive impact on the motivation and aspirations of boys whose attendance, punctuality and levels of attainment have improved over the last year.
A peer mentoring programme where pupils in year 10 supported their younger peers in year 7 had benefits for all pupils. The older boys particularly enjoyed being positive role models for the younger boys and welcomed the opportunity to develop their leadership skills.
