MBF's response to St Mungo’s consultation

Call 4 Evidence on mental health and homelessness

MBF responded to St Mungo's national consultation with case studies of best practice of how mentoring and peer mentoring schemes have been used as added support mechanisms for homeless people and people with mental health issues.

Did you know?
• A startling 35% of rough sleepers have a diagnosed mental health problem
• A recent survey of one of St Mungo's street-facing hostels found 85% of clients with personality disorder, 40% with anxiety disorder and 25% each with depressive disorder and/or post-traumatic stress disorder. Despite this none of these clients had a formal diagnosis
• St Mungo's research found that one in three homeless men and women has a health condition for which they are not receiving treatment at all

The Government has committed to reducing rough sleeping to zero by 2012. To achieve this ambition, St Mungo's calls for us to address the continuing problem of mental ill health, which can both cause and prolong street homelessness.
