Social care for cancer – research from Macmillan

Explores whether social care services meet the needs of people affected by cancer

This report - Social care for cancer - shows that people affected by cancer in England are often not given the full emotional, practical and financial support that they need, and makes a number of recommendations for change, including:
  • Better joined up working between health and social care authorities, including joint commissioning strategies and pooled budgets
  • Better use of the voluntary sector, including innovative partnership services involving volunteers
  • Involvement of people affected by cancer in the design, commissioning and delivery of services
The report highlights that services such as befriending tend to be funded by local commissioners as special projects rather than as mainstream services and consequently their funding is less secure
