9th Conference of the European Union of Supported Employment

MBF highlights the value of mentoring and befriending across Europe

The 9th EUSE Conference took place in the Congress Centre in Prague from May 27th to 29th 2009.

The international EUSE conferences aim to develop supported employment and to facilitate exchange of well-proven techniques and methods of employment for disadvantaged people in the open labour market.

The Mentoring and Befriending Foundation was represented by Deputy Chief Executive Steve Leach at the EUSE conference, where the positive impact of quality mentoring and befriending were recognised at an international level.

In his presentation on how mentoring and befriending can add value to the supported employment model Steve Leach commented that “Mentoring and befriending and supported employment are the sort of support services that need to be integrated into an overall strategy to encourage re-engagement. Mentoring and befriending are natural allies of the supported employment model which is an holistic approach that recognises that the individual’s whole life needs should be taken into account when making choices relating to education, training and employment.

Therefore the individual support offered to achieve this is crucial in this process. Working in partnership with a range of services to deliver appropriate support during the transition to work or education is an important part of being able to sustain the opportunity as well as interest and motivation."

This presentation was well received by the international audience and interest has been shown in working together through a ‘virtual’ network to further develop partnership working.
