Mental health, Resilience and Inequalities
Report sets out contribution that mental health makes to outcomes
This 2009 report by Lynne Friedl published by the Mental Health Foundation / World Health Organization sets out the contribution that mental health makes to a wide range of health and social outcomes and how mental health is a fundamental element of resilience, health assets and the capabilities that moderate risk and influence life chances and outcomes for individuals, families and communities.
It shows how the gap between rich and poor affects the mental health of individuals and argues that mental health is the lynchpin between economic and social conditions. Poor mental health experienced by individuals is a significant cause of wider social and health problems. Reducing inequalities must be seen as an integral part of economic development, and recommends that all future public policy is assessed for its ‘mental health impact’.
