The Anti Bullying Peer Mentoring Pilot teams up with FILMCLUB

Helping to raise awareness of Anti-Bullying Week and spark debate in the classroom

In the run-up to Anti Bullying Week (17th – 21st November), peer mentors all over the country will be promoting their anti-bullying messages in school through workshops, assemblies and film clubs! Film is a highly accessible media for children, which allows them to explore together some complex emotions, ideas and issues. Films such as The Bridge to Terabithia and The Ant Bully are currently being used in primary and secondary classrooms as a springboard into a discussion about bullying.

During Anti-Bullying Week FILMCLUB will be highlighting a whole season of films that will enable children to discuss the theme of anti-bullying and explore some links to organisations where the subject can be researched further.
For more helpful hints teachers and Peer Mentor Co-ordinators can download a free resource here.

Designed by film lovers and sensitive to extended schools and other educational agendas, FILMCLUB is a free to schools club providing weekly access for pupils to an exciting and diverse range of films. Web-based, free to join with an off-the-shelf nature, it is simple, effective and fun, improving teacher-pupil relations and making school a fun place to be again.

Peer Mentoring is a proven, effective and student-led programme already being used in many schools throughout the UK to help combat bullying.  Currently more than 6,000 Anti Bullying Peer Mentors are part of a pilot being run by the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation (MBF).  Over the next two years, these young people will be working closely with fellow students helping them to understand the impact of their words or actions on others and encouraging them to become active citizens in the school community. Peer Mentors can be recruited to work with fellow students, help them to understand the impact of their actions and words on others and encourage them to become active citizens in the school community.

Schools wishing to set up their own Peer Mentoring programme can find out more on the MBF peer mentoring pages and can contact the MBF peer mentoring team for details of training and resources.
