UK can learn from Japan about economic and social benefits to be gained from older people

Research explores the urban to rural movement of older people in both countries

This research from the Centre for Rural Economy at Newcastle University aims to conduct a comparative investigation of the urban to rural movement of older people in Japan and UK.

Both the UK and Japan are wealthy, densely populated island nations with ageing populations and retirees who are healthier and wealthier than any previous generation.

A main conclusion is that in the UK a change of attitude towards older people is long overdue – something that British policy makers and planners can learn from their Japanese counterparts.

There needs to be a shift to acknowledge the economic and social benefits to be gained from older people, including their willingness to engage in new businesses, or act as mentors to start up businesses, who volunteer to assist others.
