Disability anti-bullying guidance for schools
Government guidance on bullying involving children with SEN and disability launched
This new guidance is designed to help school staff understand and address the particular issues that surround sustained bullying of those with disabilities, and recommends strategies to stamp out persistent bullying of all kinds.
This disability anti-bullying package gives schools tailored advice relating to the bullying of children with disabilities and Special Educational Needs (SEN). For example, the guidance identifies that SEN students may be more isolated, and might be less likely to report bullying to members of staff.
It suggests strategies such as appointing a member of staff to look out for the child, and developing secret signals so the child can indicate how they are feeling and whether they have recently been bullied. Mentoring, peer mentoring and peer mediation are also referred to. This guidance forms part of the government’s ‘Safe to Learn’ suite, which helps schools to combat all forms of bullying, including homophobic and cyber-bullying incidents.
