Children’s Commissioners assess reality of children’s lives

Peer mentoring listed as one of the good things about being a child in report generally outlining how children’s rights have worsened

A report from the UK Children’s Comissioners to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child was presented in early June and outlined 18 areas of common concern across the UK including:

• Ongoing methods to tackle child poverty
• Persistent inequalities experienced by children
• Failure to take account of the child’s best interest in decision-making, for example in the youth justice system
• Unsatisfactory treatment of children seeking asylum

A short list in the report of ‘Good things about being a child in England’ includes: “Most children and young people are engaged, motivated and making a positive contribution, for example, volunteering, helping in the community and peer mentoring.”
