Improving services to women offenders
Together Women Programme - an example of good practice
The Ministry of Justice and NOMS have launched a National Service Framework to help improve services to women offenders. Recommendations include access to volunteering and mentoring opportunities to increase motivation and skills alongside access to learning to enable women offenders to gain skills and qualifications.
The Together Women Programme (TWP) is included in the document as an example of recommended good practice. TWP has two centres (located in Yorkshire/Humberside and North West) which use key workers to work with the women and have systems in place to recruit and train volunteers as mentors, often women who have been helped by TWP.
The Framework also lists nine effective practice conditions proposed by the Fawcett Society for commissioners to consider which include: ensure that women have a supportive peer group or a mentor to whom they can turn when they have completed any offending-related programmes. Personal support is as important as direct input addressing offending behaviour.
