A one day interactive training workshop has also been developed in conjunction with the Trust to explore the issues in further detail and safeguard your volunteers and clients.
The resources include:
• a guide outlining 10 key personal safety guidelines (for co-ordinators)
• a credit-card sized leaflet outlining the 10 key personal safety guidelines (for volunteers)
• a poster displaying the 10 key personal safety guidelines
They aim to help co-ordinators consider the personal safety issues relevant to their own programme and where necessary, review and develop new procedures to ensure their volunteers and mentees/befriendees are safeguarded.
The guide offers practical guidance and examples of good practice based around 10 Key Personal Safety Guidelines. Each guideline includes a number of risk assessment questions to enable practitioners to consider the personal safety issues in relation to their own programme and mentee/befriendee group. Legal considerations are also highlighted and signposting to further information and guidance.
A facilitator from the Suzy Lamplugh Trust worked with MBF and co-ordinators from a range of mentoring and befriending programmes that work with children and young people to develop the key guidelines, issues and solutions which form the basis of the guidance resources.
Although the personal safety guidelines have been produced initially for those programmes working with children and young people, there is much that will be helpful for programmes working with other client groups.
MBF will be sending out hard copies to projects who will then be able to order further copies if they wish.
