Young people prove a hit in Leeds

Peer Mentoring was the main focus of the ‘sharing good practice event’ held at Leeds Town Hall on Thursday February 7th.

With seven peer mentoring projects providing information to delegates about their programmes by using literature and verbal testimonies, of active peer mentors and mentees, the event was somewhat alternative as delegates were able to engage with young people and co-ordinators for as long as they wished during the first two hour session. During this time they heard about the aims and objectives of the varying schemes as well as the personal benefits for the young people involved.

During the afternoon, delegates were able to learn more about the ‘nuts and bolts’ to initiating a peer mentoring scheme as both Myers Grove School, Sheffield and North Lincolnshire Local Authority provided in depth information on establishing a peer mentoring project. A question and answer session concluded the day with both young people and co-ordinators answering questions from the floor.

Throughout the day, delegates also had the opportunity to network between themselves which helped them discover who was doing what and what worked. Input from MBF staff was also available throughout the day.

“Well structured, a worthwhile day”  Mansell Daves, Shropshire CC
