MBF response to the Education and Skills Bill

MBF welcomes proposals within this Bill for increasing the age of young people in compulsory education or training to 18 and for all adults to achieve basic literacy and numeracy skills

Recent experience working with the NEET or pre-NEET groups demonstrates the need for individual intervention and support which allows young people to make the journey across the learning threshold.

The offer of basic skills courses, vocational courses at entry or pre-entry level, pre-e2e provision and individual support in the form of mentoring would be extremely valuable.

Research has shown that mentoring and peer mentoring programmes at all levels have helped to keep young people in education and to transform their lives and aspirations and to assist greatly with the transition to higher education or into the workplace.

MBF has extensive experience in providing guidance, advice and support to over 3,000 projects across all sectors through the practice of mentoring and peer mentoring which is a one-on-one, non-judgemental and voluntary relationship which can help mentor as well as mentee.
