Risk management guide for mentoring and befriending services

A new MBF guide to help mentoring and befriending service providers manage risk more effectively – buy your copy now

Front cover of the Effective guide to risk management
We have compiled this guidance in response to research that indicated that practitioners felt their knowledge of the risks of mentoring and befriending was limited. It aims to better inform the sector and encourage more effective practice in this area.

It will help providers of mentoring and befriending services to:
• Understand the boundaries and limits in relation to risk involved in different projects
• Identify the major risks in relation to the service they are providing
• Analyse the benefits and opportunities of taking risks and weighing these against the drawbacks
• Identify and develop the main policies and procedures providers should have in place
• Develop, implement and review a risk management action plan for a project
• Map their existing practice against the requirements of quality standards

It covers legal issues, volunteer status, insurance, good practice models, checklists, forms and examples from a range of approaches. With the wide ranging breadth and diversity of mentoring and befriending provision it means that there is not a simple ‘one size fits all’ approach to risk management and this guide was put together using learning from a range of providers from across the sector.
